Gr 9&10 – Swimming skills with Golden Age School

Mikey Ferraris, PHE Teacher
In the final swim unit of the grade 9 and 10 PHE school year, LCS students have embraced a new challenge; coaching and supporting beginner swimmers from the Golden Age School.
Planning for this event began months back as the PHE team met with Scott Jamieson from Inspire Citizens with the intention to embed service learning into our swimming units. Later, under the guidance of Coach Sandy, our PHE students undertook swim rescue and lifeguarding training as well as gained an understanding of the basics of beginner swim coaching.

“I never expected teaching to be so rewarding.”
Aramees (Class of 2026)
On 31 January, 2025, Golden Age School arrived with 31 grade 4 students who were eager to get into the water. Although some of the visiting school students had limited swimming experience, they embraced the challenges set by our PHE students as they dunked their heads, dove underwater and floated around on pool noodles.

From a PHE perspective, experiences like these are extremely beneficial to fostering communication and collaboration skills, as well as developing a vital life skill which could save lives in the future. We are proud of our students who demonstrated kindness and empathy and we look forward to hosting Golden Age School again.
