Catapult and Bridge Design Project
From LCS Communications
Last year, LCS opened a brand new makerspace. This building houses our design classrooms including wood work, needle work, metal work and high tech digital video production. The space houses state of the art technology including three laser printers and three 3D printers.
Grade 6 STEM – Catapult Project
Grade 6 scientists in Ms. Adrienne’s class have been exploring the Engineering Design Process and the Scientific Method through a STEM catapult challenge, aligned with MYP Criteria B: Inquiring and designing. They started by discussing what they already knew about catapults and then dove deeper by studying the catapult phenomenon. Next, they visited the library where Ms. Schubert and Mr. Gideon taught them valuable research skills.
With these insights, students began brainstorming and planning their own catapults using the materials provided. Afterward, Ms. Ann introduced them to the MakerSpace, where students built, tested, and redesigned their catapults.
Then the following week they held a Grade 6 catapult competition in class and during Community Thursday the winners competed in the Middle School Community Thursday. Congratulations to the winners who were Okezie and Seungmin on their catapult launching the farthest in the entire grade 6! They will continue to use their catapults to work on their first science lab report that incorporates Newton’s laws of motion.
Grade 7 Bridge Building Project
Grade 7 Design students at Lincoln Community School put their engineering skills to the test every year with a bridge building design challenge. They learn about structures and design bridges that need to withstand over 100 kilograms — 100 times the bridge’s own weight.
The project culminates in a public display of how much weight each bridge can withstand with weights from the fitness room being used to add weight to the bridges one weight at time.
This year’s winning bridge held 168 times its own weight which is a record for the project over the last 3 years. Congratulations to Daniella (Class of 2030).
“Students achieved both a high level of engineering and collaboration.”
